An estimated 100,000 to 200,000 Nepali trafficked persons are in India.
Sex Trafficking is rampant from Nepal into India with 5,000 to 10,000 women and girls being trafficked each year.
Nepali girls are particularly desirable in India because of their light coloured skin and the belief that Nepali virgins are able to cure AIDS.
Victims come from all areas of Nepal but most targeted are the traditionally disadvantaged groups such as the Dalit caste(The Untouchables) and the ethnic minorities (“Janajati”, indigeneous peoples).
Studies show that 30-38% of sex trafficked victims become HIV positive.
Reintegration into society is extremely difficult for those women who do manage to escape due to the strong stigma of having been sexworkers regardless of the fact that they were forced into it.
